A ribbon cutting ceremony was held late last week (Thursday, August 8th) for the Olbiston Apartments. The building which was originally constructed in 1898 was condemned three years ago to undergo an extensive renovation. The price tag of the project was over $80 million and took almost two and a half years to complete. Asbestos abatement and construction increased the cost by about $10 million.
The Executive Director of Liberty Affordable Housing, Randall Denton said when the building was condemned, there was still around 30 residents living in unfit conditions.
There are 153 units of housing in the Olbiston. Forty residents have been approved so far and are expected to move in around August 29th. Three hundred applicants are waiting to fill the remaining units. The rent ranges from between $700 – $1200/month. There are still one- and two-bedroom studio apartments available.
Rent includes a laundry service, which is located on the seventh floor and a penthouse level community room.
